The Grand Master of Masons of Florida, assisted by
Grand Lodge, Cape Coral Lodge, and officers from other lodges in the area,
on Thursday, June 25, conducted a Masonic Cornerstone Laying Ceremony at the
new Cape Coral Police Building.
Macoy’s Worshipful Master’s Assistant tells us
that it has been the prerogative of the Masonic Fraternity, from time
immemorial, to lay cornerstones on new Masonic and public buildings. A
popular Masonic painting shows Worshipful Brother George Washington laying
the cornerstone of the US Capitol Building in full Masonic regalia.
The cornerstone is part of the foundation, but a plaque
on the building reminds Masons and non-Masons alike, that the Masonic
ceremony took place. The opponents of Freemasonry are often annoyed by
these reminders, and conspiracy theorists see them as evidence of malevolent
plots. But to us Freemasons, they are constant reminders when we pass by,
to stand square, upright, and true to the emblem on the plaque. It was a
great honor to be asked by the Cape Coral Police to conduct the laying of
the cornerstone. The Cape Coral City Manager, Chief of Police, and other
city officials were present at this historic event. It is a credit to Cape
Coral Lodge, and to every Freemason in Southwest Florida, to have been found
worthy of this honor!
